Writing teaching philosophy Statement

Writing a teaching philosophy statement seems to be an expectation when applying for a job these days. Yet, no one is ever taught how to write this kind of manuscript. The link below will take you to first to a rubric designed by the University of Michigan to assist their graduate students in writing a teaching philosophy statement. The rubric gives you some clear ideas about what sections you might include in this document.

Becoming a student of academic writing

In the process of working on your dissertation and continuing to teach and do research in your field, you have studied your discipline. You subscribe to worthwhile journals, you attend and present at conferences, you gather books on the subject, and you teach the discipline to others. You talk with others about your discipline, its nuances, its future, and your curiosities about it.

I suggest that you approach academic writing and your writing practice from the same stance. Make it a subject that you investigate and study. Reserve a spot on your bookshelf for books on academic writing.
